Duran’s ongoing project has been a series of acrylic on board paintings done in the shape of acoustic guitars. “It all started with my looking for a freer way of getting my ideas down, and I got away from the traditional rectangular, square surface that we all know,” Duran explains. “When I cut the lumber in the shape of guitars, the shape naturally gave way to more spontaneous, original ideas.”

Most of the subject matter on the guitars is described by Gonzalo as “intimate details of our lives together, Cheri and I.” Duran continues to work with traditional canvases as well, which are larger versions of the subject matter painted on the guitar series. “They’re a bit bolder, and there’s more room to work with, of course, so I can express many more ideas,” he explains.
