Amazon Games has announced that it’s publishing another online game, this one coming from Berkeley, CA-based developer Disruptive Games. The company is working on “an online multiplayer action-adventure game” set in an original setting.
The game will be “multiplatform” which would be a notable first for Amazon’s video game division. New World and Lost Ark, the two games published by the company, are only available on PC.
Disruptive Games’ credits include external development support on Activision Blizzard titles Diablo II: Resurrected, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, and Counterplay Games’ Godfall.
Interestingly, CEO Eric Ellis described the company’s upcoming title as “an online experience that kindles creativity and fosters positive social interactions.” That vaguely gives the hint of the game possibly including user-generated content, as “creativity” has been a bit of a buzzword for titles that follow in the footsteps of Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox.
“Fostering positive social interactions” has also been a recent interesting buzzword in game announcements, though our crystal ball for game-guessing is short-circuiting when trying to depict what that might look like.
We should also note this game falls under the trend of “developers announcing games in order to push recruitment,” which we’ve also seen from companies like Blizzard Entertainment and Ubisoft. Amazon’s announcement of the game includes a dedicated recruitment push for several senior development roles.
Amazon Games’ announcement also notes that the company is still pursuing internal game development at its internal studios and external partners like Guildford, U.K. developer Glowmade. The company’s push into original development has been a rocky one, with New World being the first game to properly cross the finish line (before stumbling into post-launch live development challenges that many developers are likely familiar with.)
