Sony has closed its acquisition of Haven Studios, the Canadian developer co-founded by Ubisoft Toronto and Motive Studios founder Jade Raymond.
The PlayStation maker agreed to purchase Haven for an undisclosed fee back in March, and in a tweet posted earlier today explained the deal has finally been ratified.
The news means that Haven has officially joined the PlayStation Studios family, which has grown significantly in recent years following deals for studios including Bluepoint Games, Housemarque, and Valkyrie Entertainment.
Sony has also agreed to acquire Destiny creator Bungie for $3.6 billion, with that deal being struck not long after Microsoft announced its planned $68.7 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard.
Haven has been working on a new original franchise fro PlayStation since its inception, and it seems the initial pitch for the project quickly won over PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst.
“We began working with Jade and her team in early 2021 when they were on the brink of announcing the formation of Haven Studios. From their first pitch, we were inspired by Haven’s vision for creating a modern multiplayer experience that brings gamers together in positive and meaningful ways,” said Hulst when announcing the deal in March.
“We were confident in their creative and technical expertise to deliver on such an ambitious project and were thrilled to invest in their journey developing a new, original IP for PlayStation.”
The deal was announced not long after Haven co-founder Sebastien Puel left the company. Puel, who spent just 10 months at the nascent studio, didn’t reveal why he departed the studio, but a Haven spokesperson said the team would miss his “energy and enthusiasm.”
