The value of a packable midlayer can’t be understated for frequent travelers. That’s why we’re excited to see one of our favorite American brands, Filson, continue investing into the category.
Soon, a new edition of the company’s Ultralight Jacket will pop up on the brand’s website, and as Gear Junkie‘s Adam Ruggiero points out, it looks like a promising alternative to one of our favorite lightweight mid-layers ever, Patagonia’s own Nano Puff jacket.
The jacket’s 60 grams of PrimaLoft Gold insulation is the same insulation found in the Nano Puff for good reason. The synthetic down retains up to 98 percent of its heat retention even when wet, making it great even in sketchy weather. Like the Nano Puff, the Filson Ultralight Jacket can also be stuffed into its pocket to save room in a suitcase or daypack.
Filson’s offering stands apart in its styling. There are no bright colors or shiny textures offered. Instead, the two muted colors of Winter Moss (a two-toned take on Olive green) and Raven (black) feel much better suited to the aesthetics of cities. Previous iterations featured more color options so wouldn’t be surprised to see other options soon.
Details like a collar lined with soft, warm 100 percent cotton Moleskin also indicate that the jacket emphasizes creature comforts more than shaving off ounces in weight. But there’s no official weight yet listed on the product page.
Gear Junkie states that the updated version of the jacket will officially go on sale tomorrow, so we’ll be sure to update this coverage as additional details emerge.
